I know nothing about computers.
I was anticipating Jaguar, thinking my little imic would be liberated and allow prelistening, in combination with my tibook 667's headphone jack. I guess I misunderstood "native multichannel". I thought the imic's output would be somehow combined with the headphone jack into a sort of audio "soup" (?), so I would have two stereo outs, and that is NOT the case, as I now know. You still need to select either "built in" or "imic". So much for my budget soundcard!
You guys should have called me on that one.
Anyhow, now I will need a proper card for prelistening, but, there isn't one! :O

Buy a small inexpensive mixer (behringer has one for around $50).
Plug the instrument or microphone to be recorded into a channel.
Connect the tape out to the input on the imic.
Connect the audio out from your computer to another channel on the mixer (i use the highest # channel).
Plug your headphones or speakers to the headphone or monitor out on the mixer.

Now you can directly monitor the signal you're recording through the mixer, and adjust the volume of the mix coming from the computer using the slider on the channel coming from the computer.

It's important to make sure that you are NOT monitoring the channel you are recording through Live with software, OR if you are, that you have the volume down on the channel the computer is connected to on the mixer or you'll get nasty feedback.

oh, and the point is: $50+35 is less than an emi
