As stupid as it sounds - its the exact smell that the Mac Pro emitted, and i repaired lots of them back in the day. The smell seems to come from the pads but its slowly getting better.

Cheers
so novation actuaöly is using " new apple smell" and the pagan pc users interpretate this as stinking?

The smell is due to the softener in the pads and will volatilize... I had this smell already with other pieces of hardware. And last week it became worse because I treated my studio acoustically... My god do the bass traps and flutter walls smell horrible I don't smell my launchpad anymore. :|

BTW:You can accelerate the process of volatilize if you expose you Launchpad to heat... Just put it in the stove until it's even.

some people don't feel like they've really played an instrument until they have bled onto it.

I dunno, my buddy got one on Friday in the mail (and I got the Zero SL MkII)...we didn't notice a smell and we got right in there.

That could be 1 of 2 things:
1. It doesn't really smell and we lucked out
2. We smell really bad already and didn't notice

Thanks!

Seems most of units dont smell so it might be just particular batch.
My guess, knowing the Chinese manufacturers, someone didnt clean the machine after previous job, or few bags of raw material were used (underpaid worker sold the proper one and replaced with some cheap stuff to afford new Playstation) and as result couple of hundred stinky units got shipped. Worse things happen to all companies that get stuff made in China. Even Novation had it with couple of hundreds of first SLs with some pads reversely wired.
I suspect it is the pad material, often used for toys, it is known that cheap ones, imitations of know brands use inferior, often toxic material.

Don't halloo till you're out of the wood...

I got my launchpad three days ago and by now I have to rub my nose over the pads to smell anything. I fear the "magic smell" is gone completely next week. :( For 179€ I normally expected a long-live cycle.
