Live 4.0.3 Overdub bug

When I am recording a clip and I select or deselect the OVR button the audio stops for a few seconds, and then awkwardly starts. This happens on midi clips routed to virtual instruments like Intakt and even to external routed channels. It does not seem to be processor overload, I am running at only 22% when it happens.
This did not happen as often in previous version.
Gear, Powerbook G4 667MHZ, 1068 MB, 40GB, MBox, midisport 2X2.

same here
as well as copy dragging, the program freezes for a breif second
and then resumes.

Here I can't record a MIDI clip in the session view in loop mode : record mode deactivates itself after the first pass

I am suffering the same problem.
I'm in session view, overdub is on, 1 MIDI track armed.. it records MIDI in fine, loops as it should but then when I hit the OVERDUB button to take it out of overdub mode the app seems to choke, there is a momentary spike in the CPU usage window, sometimes a little "blurt" of audio, more silence.. then the session keeps playing with no trouble..untill I click OUT of overdub mode again...
I have also had the same issue when disarming a MIDI track regardless if Live is in overdub mode or not. Sometimes it dosen't happen at all...! Most times it doesn't always choke the same way.. sometimes I get 2 "blurts" of audio, sometimes none, sometimes the MIDI notes in another clip will play 'legato' or with no note off's for a bit till it all sorts itself out..
I have tried stopping the clip I had been overdubbing before disarming the overdub mode button. Sometimes the machine chokes, and sometime it doesn't..It seems to happen regardless of wether I've got a VST, AU or LIVE plug-in on the MIDI track I'm overdubbing.. It's all very inconsistant.. I may well go back to my previous version of 4 till I (or one of the kind people here at Ableton

) can figure out what the issue is... I've yet to disable my plug-ins and see if that makes a difference!? Or perhaps unplug my mbox and run on the native drivers/outputs...? If I have any luck I'll post and let you know..
yowza..
Boz.

madlab,
When you say 1st pass, do you mean after you hit stop the first time, or after the first time through the loop? Does this occur only when the OVR transport button or midi overdub button in the arrangement view is pressed while recording, as per the examples in this thread? I have 4.0.3 and it does overdub midi clips always when first recording a loop AND when record enabling an existing MIDI clip on overdubs. I do not ever touch the OVR button or the midi overdub button during this process, however.
For example, I open a new file (my quantize setting set to global for new session clips, and quantize on transport set to "bar"), activate metronome (doesn't play yet), insert a midi track, insert a soft synth, put the track in record ready mode (session view), double click on an empty session slot (not the arrow), set the loop length, then I hit play on the transport ( to activate metronome for count in) and immediately hit the arrow on my session slot to begin recording at the beginning of the next bar. The loop will play continuously, recording on each pass until you stop the clip.
Actually, I would like to achieve what your system is doing, if I understand what you are saying: It goes through a new loop once in record mode, then immediately to into playback mode, turning off recording. This would be very useful to me. Can you outline the steps you go through when recording a loop?

OK, I'm going to try to make it clear. In session view, with OVR on, loop mode on, I double click on a slot to create an empty clip, set its length, set the track Record ready. Then click on the new clip arrow to record it. After the first pass, the record mode deactivates itself. This doesn't happen when I don't create a clip first but record straight by clicking on the circle in the slot. But then, I have to edit the beginning and end of the clip. By the way, after recording a midi clip, it never turns to read mode when I click on the red arrow after recording. Instead the arrow stays red.
I'm not sure I made it clear !

it is in read mode. the arrow stays red because OVR is on. if you turn it off, it will get green.

We found a nasty error that could produce some or all mentioned problems here. We hope to have a fix soon (Live 4.0.4).
To be more exact it could produce when changing OVR, Routing Type or Arm button:
1. Hanging notes
2. Audio/Midi Drop Outs
We are really sorry for the inconvenience.

Any word on when this is getting fixed? I get the same problem when I record a track in the Arrangement view i.e. if I arm-enable a track, start playing guitar for ex., in the middle of my recording, other tracks start dropping out, then come back. Really weird. Once they get this fixed, Live is going to be my permanent DAW...hands down.

And one more thing...
Even tho the CPU load meter is reading b/w 28% - 42%, the audio dropouts will still occur and the Hard Disk Overload indicator will turn on. And then the audio comes back after a 2nd or two.
Using a brand new PB, latest OS, with 712 MB Ram.

The limiting factor is the speed of your hard drive. Get an external FireWire drive or upgrade your internal to a 5400 or even better, 7200 RPM model. I like Hitachi/IBM drives.

Jason,
Tried your suggestion and it seems to be working. No more audio drop out. I was recording audio onto my internal drive but saving the Live file onto my ext hard drive plugged into my USB HUB. Now I have the HD plugged via FW and changed the prefs in Live and so far so good. Question: I thought Macs were supposed to be build for recording audio....w/o much outside support.

A PC would have the same problem with a 42000 RPM laptop drive. Those drives are chosen for low power and low heat.
Another solution would be to have your clips loaded into ram, rather than streaming from the hard drive.
