Hello!
I'm a total beginner when it comes to software recording although I've been a professional musician for 20 years. I've been using some portable units with cassettes and lately a little of Roland VS 880-EX for practicing before going to a big recording studio for final recording and mixing/mastering.

I'm saying humbly hello to everyone here with (obviously) loads of experience with this kind of recording...

I've bought a M-Audio Fire Wire 410 with the Delta Live bundled. I'd like to get into the "LIVE" world with the fullblown version 4 and learn as much as I possibly can. Please recommend which one to buy - the boxed or the downloadable version. The boxed one includes some "build in lessons" and "tutorial movies" not mentioned in the description of the downloadable version.

I'm not going to be using any MIDI, no loops, no pre-made samplings etc, only direct recording of acoustic music. I'll try to learn to make my own loops and also how to use use "drum modules" (I don't even know if this is called "drum machine"...)

I would say get the Boxed. You'll really apreciate having the printed manual on hand.

And the box is good for putting under your pillow because the software is so sexy you'll want to.

It would be a pity if you don't use midi and expand your horizon! (trigger scenes e.g.! with midi).
To be frank, It is nice to have a paperback manual. Also a few nice sounds in the box. The video you can find on the website. What you'll find out that Live is a nice instrument wich also is capable to record music in a total different way than tape-recording. Think parallel instead of serial!
By the way you have some nice stickers with the box version aswell!

The built in titorials are included in the downloadable version and the movies are free to download for all here.

I would agree with the recomendation to get the boxed version, mainly so you can get the stickers...... I mean the manual! I think you will have an easier time reading a hard manual as opposed to a pdf on your screen and in the mean time you can download the software to begin using while you are waiting for your box to arrive.

Wait till you realize that there's a TON of incredible quality free VST synths available on the net. You'll suddenly be very glad that Live 4 has MIDI.

Recording acoustic instruments is great, but why limit yourself? Mixing acoustic with electronic can be pretty great too!

Midi with the acoustic ?! Gosh, no!


Just kidding. Of course, I'll start from the scratch and test everything this program offers. Thanks.
