There are some plugs that let you trigger midinotes from audio as from a hit of a drum.
E-Kit Trigger -

KTDrumTrigger -

Very nice to trigger and record drums from an external pad or a complete drumset with trigger mic's
Live does not support plugs that take audio and return midi, but other hosts do.

I too would like to see this feature.
I've looked at how I would expect it to fit in, but a third track type and the "MIDI track with audio in selector" and" Audio track with MIDI out" seem to mess with the simplicity of it all. Maybe the behind the scenes architecture would direct how it could be added.

I, for one, would like a midi track with audio in, so I could use an external midi device without having to have a another audio track as the return.
either that, or some track show/hide capabilities to clean up the display.

What is really needed is just a way to grab midi out from tracks or plugins... in that way you could then do your midi from selection in a track and say it is coming from plugin xyz...
plus it'd be nice to be able to send midi to a plugin...
Both directions have quite a few uses and you cannot do in Live right now...

uhh.... well...
that would only work with very clean audio or with like a gate system, cuz you put that with an ambient landscape, ooooo you in trouble

True, but if you've got melodyne then you're able to do a few creative things with audio -> midi processing...
