newbie: editing plugins without saving within plugin

Hi,
It seems that when I edit a plugin preset - nexus, in this case - and save the live document without saving the modified preset within nexus, when I open up the document again, the modified settings of the preset are retained.
Is that how plugins work in general? Is this a recommended way of working or should you always the modified plugin as a preset within the plugin.

Do you mean arent retained.
I always forget my s's and n't's
I dont use nexus but Live remembers my setting the way I save the Live Set. The only plugs I'm using are a few TAL ones and the NI Komplete collection.

I have not tried all modern DAWs (by a long shot)
But.. both Live & Logic will save all plugin settings (preset, modified preset, or completely new settings..) with your song, exactly how they were when you last saved.
This is quite normal - otherwise every time you opened your song to work on it again.. all the settings would have to be reloaded... total PITA.
It is a good idea to save 'your' settings to a preset, so that you can call them up again on a different track/ song.
You can do than within some plugins preset system, or in Live's browser - as you prefer.
There is no true 'recommended' way of working.. but as a rule.. the more organized and consistent you are.. the easier/ better (but there are way too many exceptions to this rule too).

Thanks for your explanation. Can you explain what you mean by "in Live's browser"? Is there a way to have the retained settings without saving it into a preset within the plugin? How do you go about doing this?

http://www.ableton.com/movies?type=prod ... utostart=y
In this video the first thing Dennis talks about is the seesion view and next to session view he scrolls through a bunch of files in the "Browser"
And yes Ableton should save the Plug in the way it is just by saving the live project. Say to your desktop. I said this already and Arafel said it too. If your new and dont really understand that's OK but.... maybe you should take a couple days and you Tube Ableton video's. It really helped me a lot
Hopes that helps.

How do you save a preset into Live's Browser?
#1 to help you follow along - turn on 'Info'. View-> Info. Now a small, square box will open beside the 'Device Title Bar' - look very Bottom Left. Now when you use your cursor to scroll over something.. the Info box gives a quick blurb about it. Very Helpful.
#2 adjust your plugin to taste.
#3 In the 'Device Title Bar' - look for the 'Save Preset' button - looks like a floppy drive icon - far right button in the picture of the 'Predator' plugin.

]
#4 press the Save Preset button, and live will open the list of presets under that plugin in the Browser.. name it logically and your done!
#5 repeat for all your favorites.
