Midi Recording In Arrangement View

In a nutshell, its a total mess, and really effing annoying. It completely slows down my workflow. every time I record midi in the arrangement view I now have to edit! which is time consuming and comletely a waste of time. Even a simply 4 to the floor kik drum has to be edited. Im perfectly capable of playing a lot of my parts in real time and simple stuff lik ekiks, hats etc and then having to edit them is worse than using a commodre 64 computer for midi.

Why couldnt you simply have implemented it like recording midi in Session view??

If I loop record a 1 bar midi clip in the arrangement view, I should get 1 bar of midi data. I can loop a one bar section for a long time adding notes manually here an there, tweaking controller information on the fly etc. What I get is anything from 3 bars ro 57 and a half bars of midi data which is all over the place, most time the data doesnt even start at the beginning of the bar.....Its totally weird...

Sorry Ableton, everything else you have implemented in Live 4 is Superb, but this is a really bad.

We dont all use the session view for recording and arranging......I use that particular view for Dj'ing with.

Just change it to the way it works in session view!!

I can guarantee that crossgraders from the likes of Cubase, Logic, Pro tools will NOT enjoy midi recording in the arrangement view....


Soprry for tha rant, but this had to be said, and I really hope you guys consider changing this. I do this for a living, so its very important to me.

Still not really getting where you're coming from Chris...I have a 1 bar loop set up in arrange and am recording, overdubbing etc without any real problems. Sure, when you're in overdub and hit stop you get some funky sized blocks within the 1 bar but select them, hit consolidate and that's fixed. Don't get why you have to edit or get crazy long odd chunks....maybe I'm missing something

Ok, I know that consolidating will give me a 1 bar section. However when I record I get weird stuff like this:

1. Notes playing back in time, but on screen they dont look quantised (Edit)

2. sometimes when I consolidate I dont actually get back what I recorded (Edit)

3. Rarely can I get the kik drum to be at the first beat of the bar (Edit)...This could be a problem with my soundcard I suppose? But its fine if I record in session view.

4. Even with autoquantise on sometimes what I play is completely out of time. Its totally random, so I can reproduce this every time.

Its hard to explain really whats going on.

Its probably just me, Im so used to Logic/Cubase/Pro tools approach of Loop midi recording. But Im really trying hard to get my head around this method. I really dont like that messy weird bits and pieces of blocks lying around.....makes me feel uncomfortable he he

Im writing this on my powerbook and have live up and running. Im playing some stuff of the computer keys and its totally out of time....

Ok, I will leave it at that because its obvious no one else is having problems in this area.

No probs mate, I'll check it out a little more, haven't really spent enough time writing midi in the arranger yet, been having too much fun w/ clips in Impulse! Did notice what you mean about getting a hit on the first beat tho when I was doing my little experiment earlier.

i think i've noticed the things you're talking about. they haven't been very bothersome for me, but i've had some of those issues. certainly the chopped clips thing could be changed. i don't quite like how that works. maybe a switch on the menus to add notes to existing clips rather than making new clips?

When I record audio in the arrange page its great, the system is really suited to audio. Very funky, cool.


Like I said I dont think its a bug, but if some others are experiencing some of the things I have mentioned I would ike to know.

I should really use the clip view more, but old habits die hard I guess
