Sci-Fi themed Kurt Vonnegut inspired ambient
I'm just adding the finishing touches to which I'm submitting to a science-fiction inspired electtronic compilation due to be released in Switzerland next year. I'm a little iffy on the mix and mastering so any feedback regarding levels and the mix in general would be much appreciated.

It's hard to say anything about mix levels etc as the sounds are one big wash. Would have liked to hear more depth in your sounds. This could be accomplished by not using such levels of sustain, and instead creating alien-like textures through more involved synthesis etc.
It might not be quite what you're wanting to do but take a listen to my track "departure lounge of eno's airport" to give you some ideas of sci-fi sounds that hopefully are a bit more contemporary. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default ... dID=944007

Re: Sci-Fi themed Kurt Vonnegut inspired ambient
Hey thanks for the feedback. The song is actually supposed to approximate the natural resonances of the planet Mercury. In "The Sirens of Titan" Vonnegut describes the only lifeform on the planet as being little wafer-thin creatures which attach themselves to the the rock in the planets depths and feed off the planets vibrations. Hence the title, Harmonium's Delight. So I thought for this purpose it would be appropriate for more sustained rumbling than more delicated sci-fi tones.
Having said that, at some points it does become a little too muddy, so thanks for pointing that out.

Hey PB, really liked this, I could instantly place myself in an 'other worldly' imagincantation. I really liked the move to the melodic sequence toward the end as it gave the piece movement and evoked the feeling of resolution/conclusion. I am not sure about the little blip at 4:51, it sounded like an unexpected drop out in the recording rather than the result of an event within the landscape you were portraying in the piece. Well done and all the best with the competition.
Cheers. G.

I like it allot! Very very cool tune.
Re: Sci-Fi themed Kurt Vonnegut inspired ambient
fucking love it.
feedback or all synthesis stuff? all ableton or what? i'm aaaalll about this kind of stuff. i've been feedin tracks into each other with limiters and automating eq, filter, and distortion biz and comin up with similar noises.
sneriously, really radical.

Thanks all for the kind words! I put a bit of work into this one so it's nice to hear positive feedback.
@ gjm: You are right about the glitch at 4:51, I've uploaded a new, glitch-free version of the track. Thanks for pointing that out!
@ usedtobe: It's all Ableton with a large dollop of Reaktor 5 and various other vsts. It's a mixture of recordings I made with a contact mic, regular field recordings, and synthesis (mostly from Reaktor ensembles) all severely treated and mistreated with various Ableton and third-party effects. Process always varies but this time lined up a lot of similar tracks, and very carefully manipulated parameters on each. I'm based in Dunedin, New Zealand and would love to hear your stuff, PM me!
@ Magik and RJ: Thanks!
@ Bleep Blop Ima Robot: Thanks... I think.

Finally got around to listening to your track! I was the guy you told about the submission contest and ended up submitting "Interstellar Feller Man."
I have to say your music is the polar opposite of what I do, but I'd love to listen to this stuff in an artsy sci-fi video game!

"Nice!
Have you heard about this? I posted it in the general forum a few days ago:

You should send them something if you have an unreleased track.
You can listen to my own submission on soundcloud if you wish.
Cheers!"
I remembered reading your post about a sc-fi compilation and figured you were the same person. Sorry!
