hi folks
wouldnt be nice, if we could record envelope clips with a midi controller ? no more drawing with the mouse....
or is it possible already ?
cheers and back to tweak the synths.....

I believe it's possible. Have you tried it?

yes, tried it....
you can draw clip envelopes, but you cant record them in realtime witha midicontroller....
only possible with things like midiyoke or the iac driver on mac..... but would be cool if its working...anyway to record automation in general in the session view would be great.....
cheers

This is currently an insane limit on the musicality of the arrange window.

The workaround I've been using is to use only MIDI CC-controlled devices, and bypassing Ableton's automation-based clip envelope system entirely since I can't "play" into it.

Okay so they say that the reason we cant record automation in session view is due to the fact that it would basically require a complete rewrite of Ableton - I get this..

But what about pitch bend and mod wheel?

When I jam in session view I can record clips, and crank around the mod wheel and pitch bend and that stuff gets recorded in session view... So if possible, setting the mod and/or pitch to say a filter in Operator is awesome, because that can now be - recorded - in real time - in session view... Am I wrong?

So why not some kind of work around that will allow us to do this more parameters, or am I missing something?

I'd guess it is something to do with pitch bend and modulation having dedicated cc numbers... whereas the rest is up for grabs within the remote control system. The inability to record automation into session clips is my single major problem with Live- the gripes people come up with: sound quality, midi clock sync, crashes... these are a wind up but its possible to work around them, the lack of real time modulation recording seems to go against Live's fundamental purpose as a sequencer instrument. Its really frustrating. Rant over.

I realize this is an old thread, but i thought it would help the folks using google.

FWIW....as a work around, i usually just record a quick clip of the automation i want in the arrangement mode, then copy it and paste it into the clip view. Sort of a clunky method indeed...but it beats the mouse, IMO.

but you have to copy the clip first, and then paste the right automation in, and then turn that automated parameter all the way up in order for the automation to work right
