Running Ableton from an external drive on OSX?

Post by janzak » Thu Dec 10, 2009 10:50 am

Hey guys,
I just bought a brnad new MB Pro (Snow Leopard) which I'm using to DJ with Traktor.

I want to get going with music production on this computer, but I was wondering if it's possible to install and run Ableton + plugins, maintain samples etc. on an external drive?

My internal drive is too small to install Ableton and everything that comes with it, plus I don't want to clutter the drive for stability with other software.

So would it be possible? Or do I have to install it on my internal and keep plugins, samples, project files etc on an external?

Thanks :)

Edit: otherwise, I was thinking of alternative solutions...
a) Keep my internal as it is and have another OSX boot with only production stuff on an external drive
b) Install Ableton on the internal but move my DJ library and Ableton samples etc to an external to keep everything clean

I'm really anal about backups so different solutions require different backup systems, trying to keep the costs down :)

Get a 500GB internal, really cheap now. I found it a pain when I had my Library on an external.
