ok... i have never started a topic on the Ableton forum that has been off topic before, so don't tell me.... this is a music only forum.... blah blah... i know it is...
but here goes....
what is up with these politicians running their election campaigns around scare tactics?.... fear of terrorism, fear of economic failure... fear of bloody whatever else...
here in Australia, we just had an election were our Right wing Conservative Prime Minister got in AGAIN! this time with a bloody increased majority, and now even worse, it looks like a right wing religious senator is gonna hold the balance of power in the senate!
friggin hell... what is wrong with us???
Please people in countries who are having up coming elections, don't be passive and believe the bullshit that these Right-wing scare-mongering bastard politicians are spinning.... fight for your rights before they are taken away from you... this is what you should be really afraid of.
ok... venting over...

Well the I don't know about Australia, but the US is a nation based on fear. It's on the news, it's in commercials, it's in the churches, workplaces and schools. Humans want to be comfortable and safe more than anything else. Fear gives politicians great leverage. Dick Cheney made my stomach turn when he basically said "Vote for Bush, or you will be responsible for another terrorist attack."

yea i noticed Dick Cheney's closing words in the VP debate hit pretty heavily on the scare thing.
i quote "...faced with the possibility that terrorists could smuggle a deadly biological agent or a nuclear weapon into the middle of one of our own cities."
oh yea and i love how they've turned Sept. 11th into a political pivot point.
Fortunately Bush is making himself look like a complete moron during these debates. Slouching, Twitching, Stuttering, (can anyone say Nixon??), and best of all - Interrupting the Moderator!!! Doesn't mean he'll win, doesn't mean he'll lose. we didn't even elect him last time around and he still won the presedency. Electoral-Vote.com shows Kerry in the lead based on a culmination of state polls.

I feel that Kerry's no angel but Bush hadn't showed up for work before 911, and has spent every day since then trying to "make it right".
I love it when he talks about his extreme gratitude to the families of those soldiers killed in the campaigns of Iraq and Afghanastan. Bloody Hipocrit, he's the ONLY president in the history of our nation that has NOT attended a SINGLE military funeral during wartime. How he gets a single vote baffles me, but those scare tactics are proving to be the Republicans best weapon.
The only thing you have to fear is the inability to fear!

Fear isn't always a bad emotion......if I wasn't scared of fire I would be a a pretty ugly fellow right now (and in pain).
But, fear can keep you in a box.....if I was scared of criticisim I would be an uncreative, boring, poor mute.
I mean if Bush and Clinton had of been more afraid of terrorism, and not so scared of political and international criticism 911 may not have happened.
I wish I could vote for Bush and the Republicans, but I don't think I can because of the horrendous decisions they have made, and I am Scared that they will make more. I don't want to vote for Kerry and the Democrats because I am Scared that they will take more of my money and spend it on someone elses health care.

The weird thing is NOBODY that I know, or anybody at work or any clients had voted for howard... and everyone that I had this conversation with didn't know anybody who voted for him either...
I just can't imagine what sort of people voted for him/his party.

out of curiousity - does AU have computerized voting machines?
i.e. you don't pull a lever, or punch a card - but rather push a touch screen or anything like that?

i don't put it past zealots on any side of the spectrum to rig an election

Hey, i'm a little bit scared by your comments here.... in Australia, we have a bloody good health care system, (no thanks to John Howard)... I reckon 2 things in this world people should have 'equality of opportunity' to: education and health... it is really the duty of your society to look after the whole community.... so mate... really why on earth wouldn't you want to give up a small amount of the money you make for the betterment of your "fellow Americans"?....

i know mate!! it's ridiculous.... but remember that Midnight oil song "redneck wonderland"... sad that we have a nation that seems to value economic rationalism above humanitarianism and the environment.

a bit off topic but what becomes Peter Garrett? Is he an actor of your political system or what?

firstly, lets disect that comment.
you are scared. who put this fear into your heart?
secondly, our nation could put $200+ Billion towards healthcare if we hadn't have chosen to invade Iraq, a nation that never attacked us. (911 commission anyone?), and if Bush didn't give a tax cut to the richest 1%.
But he had to subsidize all those campaign contributions one way or another right?

well.... he joined the labor party, and i'm pretty sure he won his seat, so he is now a 'real' politician...
... as for the actor call...i wouldn't go as far as to say that he has the celebrity 'governator' status...
