Someone with the same problem here:
http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=132429 - wonder if someone who owns the launchpad edition can confirm that playing MP3s is possible, as the Ableton spec page says it is...

the lauchpad edition is an extreme light version of live. You can't do anything in that version. You can't use mp3, rex files, I can't remember about wav. You can only have 8 tracks at a time and you can old load eight clips at a time. you can only use 2 vst 's at one time. I own live 8 so I did not even register launch pad edition. I jst gave it away to a friend who will jst play around with the program. I am sorry to say that this verison seems to be lighter than other light verson but I could be wrong. Novation and ableton know that you will have to upgrade to live to really use the hardware. Either way I am sorry to break the news that you should go ahead and upgrade to live since you obviously like live enought to buy a dedicated piece of hardware to use it.
The one nice thing is that you will get a "dicount to upgrade to live"

That's not what the Ableton page says:

Launchpad Edition: MP3, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC Support Y
