I'm trying to figure out how to make a rolling percussion bell sound. I'm not sure how to do it. I've tried to lay out the midi but its not sounding right. Does anyone know a trick? It can be observed in this track by laidback luke @ 48 sec. THANKS

I assume you are programming the noise in Drum Racks?

Have you tried playing around with the groove of the midi, velocity of the sample, as well as putting a velocity sensitive filter on each of the hits?

Samples sound far less "machine gunner" when you do subtle tricks like these.

Possibly, I think the main thing in it is getting that shuffle groove going. Then play with the velocity and filter.

What do you mean by shuffle groove? I don't understand

for rolls there is a neat trick from the covert operators using a midi-rack, see here:

To get that type of roll draw in a striaght 16th pattern then reduce the the velocties of the notes, so note 1 would be say 20, note 2 70, and note 3 would be 100, note 4 70 and note 5 20, keep repating this pattern for a bar or 2 and just copy.

Also add some swing to it. That should get it shuffling along. Then of course you need the right sound which is down to personal choice.

I use an old Reason trick I picked up yrs ago with the delay plug-in:

Set the wet to 70% then up the feedback slightly to create a 'natural' sounding roll.

Can do the same with pretty much any delay with some tweaking.
