so my CPU showed 29% with the test, I am going to have a go at overclocking this afternoon, my CPU is only running at 31 degrees C idle so this shouldn't be a problem - I'll re - run the test when I have done it

Managed to get 19 - 21% with my new i7 iMac with Live 8.1.1. :D I haven't worked in Live for a while though, already made the switch to Logic. :P

wow, I've just nearly choked on my coffee

overclocked the i5 to a modest 3.0 GHz and now the test is showing 16% CPU usage :D

I have looked at overclocking my i7 but it looks pretty complex to me. Is it difficult / very time consuming ?

best
:)
I have just done it - I have a Gigabyte motherboard and there is a utility called easytune which does it all for you. I am sure all the main mobo manufacturers will have a similar utility

@oneman virus: Could you post the details of your system? Which ram, mobo and most important, which cooler do you use? With good cooling you should be able to run stable @4ghz...

I have a GA-P55-UD3 mobo, and corsair ddr3 1600 ram - I'm using the stock cooler that ships with the i5, and arctic silver paste went on the cpu.

I think the gigabyte easytune software overclocks the ram as well (???) The CPU is now running at 50C, but I havent done a hard stress test. I'm massively happy with the performance increase since the OC, and have no need to go any higher. I was working on a tune earlier using several operators, ableton effects as well as reaktors spaceverb and audiodamage EOS reverb, and the CPU didnt get above 8%. I seriously doubt I need any more horse power at the moment so am happy to keep it as it is.

Hope this helps in your decision

50 degrees is fine... you can check the maximum heat with a tool named prime...http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=103 or just use 4 calcs with 99999999n! If you got 25gbp or 30 eur I would recommend a proper cooler, my temps went from 80°C with standard cooler to 50°C with my new cooler (@full load). That would reduce the risk of heat probs during summer plus you can go much further with overclocking. I would check how far you can go with standard voltage if I was you...that would give you maximum performance without any extra power consumption(=not more heat, no reduced lifespan).
