Live 8.1 cannot handle more than 24 tracks on Imac intel

Hello guys everytime I use live as a recorder/sequencer on my IMAC intel core 2 duo 2.26 ghz with 2 gigs of ram and more than enough hard disk space...Ableton starts dropping out, puts latency like crazy and just doesnt work anymore...
If i do the same on logic 8.0.2, I can go up to 64 tracks full of vsti, eqs everywhere and i don t even see the limitations yet...
So it s not my computer...i believe there is a problem with live architecture or the way the preferences are set in the software...
Can you help me...I don't want to be forced to use ableton on a pc...I have the apogee ensemble and it s mac osx only...
