Can barely handle 3 tracks

I'm pretty sure Live 6 & 7 weren't as much of a processor / memory hog as Live 8 and it's really frustrating.
For example, I have 3 midi channels with 3 midi instruments on them 'Keys-FM(Tube-Chorus-Reverb)' and trying to play them is nigh on impossible The audio it sputtering, glitching, cracklingand my CPU usage is way over 55%... for 3 tracks.
This makes Live barely useful for playing in a studio set up - playing 'live' would be a nightmare. I would consider myself having a fairly new Macbook (1 year old - as old as Live
and yet it just struggles to cope.
It's really disappointing as it used to be so much leaner.
C'mon Ableton - lets optimise things a bit.

Edit: Macbook Core Duo 2ghz, 4gb RAM, 10.6.2, Live 8.1.1
