timing options

Max's scheduler is definitely not natively great for tight timing, apart from instances where sloppy timing is ok, or perhaps where all your devices are being triggered in Max.
I believe the 'quantize' function in Max for Live has changed this, although I haven't found extensive documentation on the subject. I believe it works by adjusting specified objects running at scheduler rate to be synced (as much as is possible) to the Live transport. I haven't actually tested this in practice enough though, (maybe there's a section in the manual I have not seen).
Another option is to use the Live API devices to interact with Live midi clips and use the clips, as I believe Ableton clips run at more precise resolution (though this would only work for other soft synths... as soon as you go back into max w/ midi date it's scheduler rate again)
Or it would be possible to use max devices at audiorate and output envelope data as audio.
Anyways, I'm not an expert at all on the subject and I'm just kinda brainstorming. Maybe someone better qualified to talk on the subject can comment?
cheers
