The economy has hit my trade pretty hard over the last year. I personally have been unemployed since late July. I'm running out of unemployment and life is generally pretty bleak. I don't make my living from music. This is just a hobby and something fun just to focus my mind on. I was wondering how you guys make a living and if the economy has hurt your too?

Im not shore I get what you mean by "has the economy hurt you". But regarding the thread topic: I have a job besides music. It pays about 75% and music pays 25% of my income. Im working on changing that in favor of music.

My day job is of a flexible type. I can choose what days I want to work. Its based on projects that lasts from a week to a few months. But you can even choose which days to work within each project. In that regard it goes well with music and gigs. The pay is a little low, but the freedom is worth a lot to me.

Got a daily job that supplies 100% of my income.
Recently my company has been hit hard by economic downturn and several friends lost their job.
I'm living on a day by day basis. Nothing doesn't matter anymore. Any day could be your day
when someone calls you to tell you you're out.
Bombs are exploding around me. Still alive though.

I'm pretty lucky. My job is 100% of my income and we've been pretty well shielded from the rough times (I consider myself very lucky here)... I work for the guys who make BlackBerry.

Normal day job pays most of my income, music doesnt pay much.

As for econonic downturn, well the company I work for decided to dump 5% (which amounts to several 000 people) of its workforce last year because profits were down a little bit (no - not making an actual loss, just smaller profits for a few months) and generally use it as an excuse to make life harder for those still people here. Do they actually need to? No - not at all - just a good excuse for managers to tighten everyone elses belts except their own...

I'm getting paid by washing my peepee. In my dreams.

I work for a 'public housing' organisation, specifically a housing association.

Depending on where you live in the world you might be more familiar with these definitions than 'public housing':

My job is to work in conjunction with local residents to improve the services we provide and the communities in which our tenants live, and to prepare us for inspections by the Audit Commission.

I've been doing this job for about 18 months. It was a big step up from my previous role in terms of responsibility, workload, pressure, and salary.

I am one of the very lucky ones who has been able to improve their situation during the recession.

Got a job as an external TA at a university and I work a few nights a week as a DJ. The Olympics are coming to town, which will help the DJ income. This work nearly pays the bills but my wife is in school and not making much right now. I just got my doctorate but it's hard finding work as an instructor in this economy. A whole bunch of profs who might have retired saw their pensions cut in half when the bottom dropped out and decided to stick it out a few more years. I should have a real job in the fall (so I can quit DJing and be a grown up), but it's gonna be a struggle. My feeling is it's tough everywhere but I have it pretty good.

Landed a regular DJ gig every other weekend at this pretty cool bar. I spin mashup from 11-2. It's pretty great, $400 a weekend.
Otherwise during the week I've been writing beats for sale on my website, pulls in around $200 a week.
Also my band has been coming up lately. We play a show once a month, draw is around 100 heads. A few indie labels have even approached us!
Otherwise, I have the occasional Live set at a party. I typically charge $200.

... Hopefully soon this will all be true.
