WTF?? Big crash lots of work lost!!!

Post by scottwallis » Mon Jan 25, 2010 10:51 pm

This sucks Ableton. Im on 8.10 and major crash resulting in loss of most of the evenings work....

How many updates until you get it right??

Ableton Suite 8 for sale, Pm me offers!!!!

Sooner i switch to something more reliable the better, should have done it ages ago. I have been patient long enough!!!!

Sort it out!!!!!!!

P.S... Yeh guys its worth saving your work every time you remember, bloody phone rang time i got off i thought i had done it more recently than i actually did.

All i did was change from the Strobe vst to Jupiter without first deleting Strobe from the midi track, i just double clicked on the Jupiter vst to replace.. God that must be a simple issue that one!! First time thats happened anyway normally the crashes happen when trying to do something a bit more technical!!!

Hi scottwallis,

Have you tried restarting after the crash? It's possible that Live will be able to reconstruct your work based on the contents of your Undo history.

If you do get this to work, we strongly recommend updating your version to 8.1.1. It seems that most users are finding this considerably more reliable than 8.1.0.

Best,

Hi Dennis

Normally i can recover from the "Live Unexpectedly Quit While bla bla bla" Dropbox that comes up when u reload the programe. One this occasion it threw me back to my last save (about 4 hours ago)

Now ive started working to get back to where i was at. Is there anything else i can do to open at the stage i was at prior to the crash?

Best!

Unfortunately, it's probably not possible to get a more recent version than the one that was available at the next launch.

In any case, I would suggest trying to work with 8.1.1 instead. It fixed a large number of issues.

Hmmm - that would be the version that died on me at about the same time.

As for the undo history - I would seem loggical that the restore would plod through the undo history until either it suceeded or crashed again...?

What does UndoMarker.cfg do if it doesnt mark the point at which it died again when trying to recover? Im guesing it should be possible somehow to replay the undo until the point just before it died on the previous attempt?

That has to be easier at least than looking at the damn thing in a hex editor to try and remember what you did? ;)

Even a crude command line tool for doing this would be most most welcome right now for me.
Nothing to see here - move along!

Your very observant today arent you? Correct tho damn it!!

Yeah was on the phone and completely forgot to do it what like normal every half fucking hour because the program is so arsey to use.

Maybe Ableton should stop crashing all the time....

Damn!

it does stop crashing, if you drop all your vsts.

but i hope they get it working flawlessly with all vsts again, so people like you can enjoy it that way.

Haha yeah, "people like me"

Note to self, must drop "all" my vsts in order for Ableton to work properly... Hmmm!!!

Why is it a big fail if he didn't save it for 4 hours? When you're in the midst of working sometimes it just happens that you don't save. If a program crashes you should be able to recover the work regardless if the program restores it from the undo history (which obviously failed in this case and shouldn't have!) or if the program has an auto save function.

yep...
there are lessons to be learned here...
1. 'save as...' as frequently as you can..
2. always record to audio stems as well..
(like the old timers...)

it's the nature of the computer to crash when you're working on important stuff...
gear/cables also tend to fail when most needed...
I think it's called 'Murphy s' law or something...

Ken
because it could have been a power outage ,a hard drive failure or anything else that's not predictable
(...Live8 crashes are pretty predictable...
I'll give it a 1/10 ratio when composing..)
bottom line... it's the users responsibility to save the material...
