Ableton should sell a dev kit or commercial controller software for the iPad.

I second, third and four-billionth that. A main screen each for session and arrangement, and pop-up screen for device and plug-in controls. All in a tiny footprint on my desktop

it would be good to relegate my enormity of controllers to the spare room or eBay

I say forget iPad and just build it right into Live. There are a number of multi-touch PCs out there and I'm sure Apple with do the same with MacBooks at some point. Windows 7 has the multi-touch baked right in, just update Live to understand the input and give you an interface designer.

A PC running Windows 7 with a touch screen does not even come close to the experience of using the iPad. Windows 7's touch screen feature is a combination of the old pen-centric Tablet PC and the hand/finger-centric Surface Table. Many, if not most, of the feature remain pen-centric. Finger-tip touch control is an afterthought at best and simply ignored at worst, as already evidenced by netbooks with touchscreens running Windows 7.

Netbook? Who said anything about a netbook? I'm talking 17" widescreen Core i7 w/ 4GB of RAM and all the other bells and whistles. Who would even want to try and run Live on a netbook? Dell Studio 17 Touch, that's what I'm talking about.

i think PD - Pure Data or MAX is a really good way to switch a touchscreen into a controller. You can create a patch with the controller elements you need, then send controllerdata via midiyoke or a similar app..
