M-audio Firewire 1814

Run a search for Firewire 410 on this forum. Unless M-Audio has seriously revamped thier manufacturing and quality control processes for the manufacture of the FW1814 (I seriously doubt it!
) then I would avoid it. Honestly though, dont take my word for it... talk to some folks that have them. I am just spitefull after my own experiences with a FW410

i've known a few (now past) m-audio employees and the concensus has always been that they are severely understaffed when it comes to getting good drivers written. especially for OSX.
doesn't stop them from selling the products though i guess.

I have the firewire 1814 and use it on my ibook running OS X Panther and have no problems at all.
Very happy with the purchase!
Just follow the install procedure correctly and run the 1814 off of it's own power (not the firewire bus power) and you should be fine. Oh and they (m-audio) strongly suggest you don't hotswap it, when you need to unplug it so you can take your laptop on the go just shutdown first.

just tested:
FA-101
Presonus Firepod
M-Audio 1814
Side by side on a g4 powerbook. M-Audio is the only one that requires (quite glitchy) drivers on Panther, the others are plug & play. M-Audio has 2 headphone jacks, a nice touch. Of the three, I kept the presonus for its 8 preamps, but the FA-101 has the option of being powered from your laptop which is cool, and it's small for portability. J

On the Mac, the 1814 requires a G4 running faster than 800 Mhz, especially for a laptop.

I have been thinking on buying the presonus. Can you tell me how is it? Is it stable? (I use PC) How does the recording sounds?

I run the 1814 on panther and I was just wondering what you felt was glitchy about the drivers?
Or were you just put off by it needing drivers?
I have had no problems with my 1814.
