Max editor does not open

I'm desperately trying to open the max editor window by clicking on the small icon in the title bar of the live device.
The button 'spins' for a while, then it stops, but no editor opens.
All of a sudden it stopped to work, although I saw it working before.
In order to test M4L I'm using the Demo of 8.1.1 Suite with Max 5.1.2 and not my authorized 8.1 version.
I hesitate to buy M4L until I'm certain it will be running correctly on my system.
Any help will be appreciated.

I had sort of the same thing, from a previous post:
When I try to edit a Max midi device by pressing the edit button in Live 8.1.1, Max loads and then hangs without opening the presentation.
If I try the same with an audio device everything works fine.
When I inadvertently killed the Live process, instead of Max, I noticed a midi related error in the Max window behind it:
midi_dm: error 88781131 activating port Microsoft Synthesizer.
I then disabled Microsoft synthesizer and Microsoft GS wavetable synth from the Max midi setup preferences and I was then able to edit midi devices.
It seems Max preferences have other midi devices enabled than those that are set in Live's preferences.

Since I had no other idea, I renamed the whole preferences folder. It looks like it was re-created by Max during the next start.
I could not find any midi-preferences files. Still does not work. Then I copied the
[email protected] files from the backup into the preferences directory and deleted the Microsoft GS entry. Still no editor...
On a second computerI with a similar config everything works fine.
I suspect it might be related to the former installation of the Live 8.1 beta version. But I don't know.

I meant the midi setup in the max window.
Try to kill the live process with your taskmanager and perhaps you'll see the max window appear.

Finally I found the solution: Buying a license!
Since I could not get the editor running on my laptop, I called the Ableton support. They told me, there currently is no demo of M4L and wondered how comes, I could get it running on a different PC.
So I took the risk of buying a license without testing and everything works fine now.
BTW: the Ableton support was very helpful and friendly
