Can Live do...

I just bought a copy of Ableton Intro, but before I register it, I'm wondering if it can accomplish what I'm trying to do.

I want to use it for live performances with the MPD24, and I want to trigger clips "MPC" style, like mono mode with stuttering, etc. No overlapping, a clip ends once a new clip is hit.

I originally thought of using MPCs for live use, but chopping up the clips I want to trigger proved to be very time consuming.

So, can ableton do this well? Hopefully you understand...

I really think so, although I don't know what you are reffering to with "stuttering".

You can either trigger clip by mapping them on pads, or, if your clips are audio, put the audio in drum racks and use choke groups, so triggering a pad cuts the other.

yup.

I used to use an mpc2000 and an mpc2000xl for live performance and since I started with Live (version 3) I haven't looked back.

thanks for your help.

It is possible that I could slice the clips how I want in the clip editor, then import them into drum racks?

Thanks for the insight, much appreciated

Unfortunately you cant slice to midi in intro though- one of intros downfalls.

eep! still it's possible to slice clips up manually and throw them into drumracks. bit moe work, but still easier than on an mpc

hmmm that's what i planned on doing anyway. Does slice to midi work sorta like Recycle? I worked with that and reason maybe about four to five years ago but found it limiting. Then I moved on to an all hardware set up. Hopefully ableton live will restore my faith in software

Could you tell me how your live rig works... without revealing your secrets of course. I'm exploring the best options to work out a live setup using an mpd-like device.

Well, I don't have an mpd... I use 3 faderfox controllers. 2 x lv2 to control track levels/mutes/solos, each track has an eq8 on which is also controlled by the rotaries on one of the lv2s, the other set of rotaries I use to launch clips/scenes and navigate through the matrix. I generally bus everything down to two channels which I control with the dj2, or I just use the upfaders there for extra tracks - I assign the rotaries/buttons on the dj2 and the joysticks on all 3 to control effects depending on the liveset - that's the basics - I do tend to switch it around a lot depending on what I'm playing.

For live performance I'm generally running 8-12 tracks of audio, and 2-6 midi tracks to keep cpu load down - I bounce (sorry, freeze) any cpu hungry synths down to audio and sacrifice a little tweakability - at least a couple of midi tracks will be drumracks and normally a couple of synths as well.
