Hey, I'm wondering what you need to be able to use another artists song in a mashup. Will you need to pay some sort of fee to them for the right to publish you mashup/remix?

With the advent of the Interwebs, everything that can be digitally copied (software movies music) is free. Do what you want. If they come after you, they're just being old school. Fuck em. Paying is voluntary!

You can get away with it for the most part if you just make a mash up and post it online for free. The thing is, as soon as you start selling copies of the music, then you run the risk of pissing someone off.

So basically get $ from ticket sales, t-shirts, etc instead of selling CD's..

If you post online, I suggest you only post a 128Kbit mp3 version and not higher bits rates. Also make available for streaming only and not download. Also make sure it is fully and corrrectly creditted and if possible links to originals for purchase etc. This will still violate your acceptable usage agreements on most music hosting sites, so you rick having your account closed if a complaint is raised by the rights owners.

Doing all of these thigns will at least allow you to claim that you were acting in what you beleived to be a reasonable compromise between creativity and protecting the interests of the original rights owners.

Quite a small few labels around dance music have hinted that they dont mind people posting low bit rate online remixes/mashups inclusions in DJ sets etc with appropriated creditting etc, though they are ofen touchy about mashups and remixes. Thats not to say they are all like that unfortunately!
