I totally agree with you, however, my definition of the word shit is more literal as I think depeche mode are a pile of steaming doggy do. I know they cracked it in the USA big time but I still remember them as being a frail teenybop light-weight electro band with silly haircuts.

can't think of Rush without picturing the Trailer Park Boys episode where they kidnap Alex Lifeson and tape him up and force him to play guitar with Bubbles back at the park.

the guitar sounds like a bedroom recording...

They grew out of the teenybop thing really fast after Vince Clarke moved on.
Within 18 months they went from 'Just Can't Get Enough' to 'Leave In Silence'.
Only the first album is teeny synthpop, with a couple of other singles such as 'See You'.

Compare that to Black Celebration, Behind The Wheel, Strangelove, Stripped etc which were less than 5 years down the line from 'See You'.

The Beatles started off as a rock and roll covers band - compare that to Sgt. Pepper. David Bowie did 'The Laughing Policeman', compare this to Space Oddity, To Life On Mars, to Ashes To Ashes etc.

Growth and change can really take a band from one level to a whole other level. This is the case with Depeche Mode. Violator remains one of my all time favourite albums.

In Britain, goth girls would never go near DM. They went for The Cult, The Cure, The Mission and Siouxsie and the Banshees. DM were always seen as a synthpop band, even though they were only truly so for a real short time.

It's actually the laughing gnome and despite its utter silliness, Bowie was certainly taking a fair amount of acid around the time....sort of puts a different spin on it.

Also, the tune rocks when you give it a proper listen.

Luckily most women only have about 10 albums they listen to their entire life and about half of those you hate anyway without them needing to ruin them for you.

that is so very true.....at least Alanis Morissette and Ani defranco have been relatively silent as of late....
