like most of you, i have read that ableton live is the " top selling music software of all time" on robert henke's web site and on some other sites that are interviewing robert henke.
when i try to search Google for a list of top selling daw's i really dont get anything to back this statement up, mostly i get a list of some guy's top ten favorite music production software.
who keeps track of this?
does anyone have a link that shows the top selling daws?

It would shock me to find that Live is number 1. It's not even my favorite.

It's unlikely you'll find any sales figures for music software anywhere, however, i did have a chat with a UK senior sales person a couple of years ago and told me what the top 5 selling daws were. Ableton wasn't on the list. Cubase and Pro-tools were at the top with Logic, Reason and I think it was sonar occupying the other 3 positions (can't remember which order).
This is certainly not a definitive list but I hope it offers some insight.
Oh and the positions given, did not include EDU or free Lite versions.

i dunno.. there are alot of people who just upgrade from the bundled software with mid controllers n such... that and just the sheer popularity of Live has been unprecedented imo.. It's gotta be in the top 3.

I'm not sure what that info is based on and what the quote is (i.e. maybe it was "fastest growing" or something like that)
but I think it's highly unlikely it's the number 1 selling.... the others are too firmly intrenched
if Windows didn't have such a huge market share I would guess it would be logic, and even with PC sales, so many people in the music industry use Macs it would still come close

Top selling music production/DAW software :
1 ) Cubase/Nuendo (Cubase 89%, Nuendo 11%)
2 ) Logic
3 ) Protools LE/MP (85%) and Protools HD (15%)
4 ) Sonar
5 ) Reaper
6 ) LIVE
7 ) Digital Performer
8 ) FL Studio
9 ) Reason/Record
10) Samplitude/Sequoia (Samplitude 91%, Sequoia 9%)
Or at least, I read this on 2 or 3 different forums, although I can't vouch for the accuracy of it.
Cubase/Nuendo, Logic and Protools made up almost 60% of the total market. Combined sales of Cubase and Nuendo (basically the same product except Nuendo has some extra post production and video capability) were top but Logic was only 2% behind, with Protools about a further 7% back of Logic. No lite versions or educational versions included.
The Gearslutz 'which DAW do you own' poll is remarkably similar, except Reaper is ahead of Sonar, otherwise almost identical. Coincidence ?

well here is the quote from henke's website: "we are now the most successful music software company out there"
http://www.monolake.de/technology/ableton_live.html
and here is a quote from "fact magazine's" website: "Ableton Live, the application that the two were instrumental in designing, is now the biggest selling music production software in existence"
http://www.factmag.com/2010/01/12/monolake-silence/
i have never heard of "fact magazine" until i found the link in the cdm interview with henke.

I would say that it could be the number one at this stage as Live's appeal goes beyond the traditional DAW market and lets face it up until a few years ago that market was very small anyway as you needed very expensive outboard gear with the software tools such as Protools. The market is much bigger now and I have seen live for sale in music shops, record shops where they don't sell other DAWs. Diddent Lives sales go off the charts after somebody on American idol was using it?? Seem to remember demand spiking after that. Also like Reason a lot of people who bought cubase or logic also buy Ableton. That cant hurt sales.

Still, it is somewhat curious though; it includes (for example) news on Apple unveiling Logic studio but has nothing on Ableton. I'd imagine that they'd mention the joint ventures with Akai pro and Cycling '74 for example, Max for Live was a big step.
just type in ableton live by itself

Nathan's topic says #1 SELLING software, and although may be closely related to the most Popular software, cannot be based on popularity. The only way to support that premise is to compare the number of units sold. Not a poll on preference from users.
