I would say if you have some patience and/or money, get the monome.

i just started one of these threads last week. i also found alot of info over here:

http://post.monome.org/comments.php?DiscussionID=6463

its seems like most people here say "get a launchpad" and most over there say "get a monome." but thats not surprising.

i decided to get a launchpad (when i have some extra cash), because of price difference, or the time spent putting together an arduinome. it seems like you can do almost all the same stuff on a launchpad as on a monome, with some trickery. plus you get to keep the built in auto mapping / triggering stuff while loading "apps" onto the user slots of the launchpad.

And honnestly, it depends on how materialist you are. The build quality and the beauty is really not the same.
I got two LP, they can burn or whatever, I don't care. I got one 128 and a 64 kit, a single scratch on them and it's the end of the world.

yeah, mr fou also mentioned in another thread that he doesnt like to tour with monomes, which is a good point and something to consider..

Yeah, Mr fou replaced his 128 by 2 LP. But only for triggering clips.
If I were playing with MLR for instance, no doubt I'd choose a monome. I think, due to the midi protocol, the response may be laggy with the LP. And the buttons are too big, that would be sport.

I couldn't agree anymore with these two comments. Especially about the MLR. The Launchpad can seem laggy & draggy as hell at times. Was playing around with the Stretta suite sequencers last night for awhile & the LP's reaction time was actually starting to piss me off a bit. However---It was doing its job great for a wee baby monome prototype clone. Seems to be "Catch 22" with using midi protocol. With the LP you do have the Ableton instant mappings & such---tho when it comes to MLR, monome is king (or queen)

this is too easy;

launchpad for controlling live's session view.
monome for performing with monome apps.

you'll probably end up owning both.

^Yes HOWEVER many of us on this forum can't afford a monome.

It's equivalent I suppose to a guitar player lusting over a American 60's reissued Fender Stratocaster with all the bells & whistles but knowing he can only budget to get a china made Squier model.

If only it where that easy to say "Duh--get a monome". Financially speaking.

Well. If you're running mlr stand alone than by all means get a monome. If you hope to Rewire stand alone mlr into Live, then don't waste your time because Rewiring is SHIT.

Playing mlr with Live? Get the LP and the mlr for M4L: http://docs.monome.org/doku.php?id=app: ... maxforlive Best part? No fiddling with Rewire.

^^^^ assuming he's got M4L or is willing to pony up $300 for a closed system to run what is essentially freebie open source software.

:)
