I know it's a simple question but I'm interested to know how everybody uses each differently in different situations and also to see what the most common/accepted uses are.

That's easy:
EQ8 always,
EQ3 never.

EQ 3 is not neutral..when all settings are on zero it still muds up the sound.. probably for the analog feel .-/
if you like that or need the special dj fx> asignment of kill buttons to a controler you might go for it..
for all other things eq8
of cause you can use eq 8 for dj fx aswell if you combine some units in a fx rack.. you get it even better than eq 3 this way when you spend some time to work out the details..
and
there is a hidden hi quality mode for eq8 you dont have on eq3..
i actually like Eq8.. i prefer it over the logic channel eq.. however it cant match with highend plugs.. but its defenetly a highlight within the ableton plugs..
i think it only works on the daw samplerate internaly.. not like waves for example that oversample within the plugs..
at least the quality of EQ8 is rising on higher samplerates while the wave plugs allways sound good..

Not sure what everyone have against EQ3, its bloody fantastic.
The most wonderful sweet analog filter ive come to know in the world of software.
It is NOT a EQ, so dont even try it for that. Its a 3 band analog juicy filter. If u want a analog sweetener/change of tone, this is it. Been my secret weapon for years, so im actually glad people dont generally like it.

EQ3 is if you have Ableton mapped to a controller for live DJ'ing purposes. So you still have your 3 dial DJM EQ feel.
If you DJ'ing between records/cd's/ableton your nott gonna want to arse about with an 8 band EQ on ableton when mixing. its not necessary.

EQ3 as a band pass filter, basically turn off the low & high and adjust the frequencies. EQ8 for everything else.

i love the bias superfreq EQs for ultra clean sound and 'surgical' EQ-ing. (closest thing to weiss's EQ 1, i know of!)
and the sonalksis sv 517 mkII for beautiful colour, also amongst my faves is the spl freeranger, even it has only 4 fixed bands, but it sounds awesome.
and every now and then freebees like voxengo's overtone EQ and bluecat's tripple EQ. next to TAL's tilt EQ (great thing that is)
and i like logic's EQs a lot, especially the FAT EQ and the linear phase one.
and i don't own them, but when i have the possibility i also like the UAD vintage emulations a lot. like the pultec, great on vox.
it is not that live's EQs are bad in any way, i just don't like 'em compared to the ones i mentioned, that's all.

Nothing wrong with fixed frequencies, 8-band parametric EQs with adjustable frequencies, Q etc aren't the best thing for people trying to learn how to EQ.
Been using Stillwell Audio 1973 a lot lately and find it easier to get on with because there's less to think about.

of course not, the helios 69 has only a few bands as well, yet it is such an incredible musical EQ and you can push it so hard. yumm.

right click on EQ8 and a pop up window appears with the possibility to set it to HQ mode.
