Hi All,

I'm going through Tom's video now trying to create a proper Live set, finally, but wanted to know this...

When he creates sub Mixes of the all the tunes elements, E.g, Bass lines to Bass Sub, synth lines to Synth etc,,,Does anyone have any idea for the Return channels???

In some cases once everything has been re-routed before I attempt a mixdown I have quite alot of Spill into the send units and these elements technically won't be included in my mixdown...

Has anyone got any thoughts on this please???

I haven't watched Tom's vids in awhile, but I would think it would be ideal to have your audio tracks as dry as possible unless it's losing something important to the sound and then create effects send tracks after the fact that would work well generically throughout the set. In other words, don't expect to use the exact effects tracks that are specific to a single mix.

You have a good point there! I kinda thought as much so cheers for that!!!

If it's a send, like a delay, I would leave it out and that would be one of the things that you can do live... but if you have a ton of delays, reverbs, etc you might want to resample those into the clips, but then the sub bus recording method won't really work for you, you'd have to do it track by track in order to get the delay/reverb tails on the right track and so on.

Of course!! The resample feature don't know why I didn't think of that - that'll definitely work for anything with loads of automation and then for more simply delays etc I can do live - nice one! Cheers!

Basically his way of sub busses is like resampling 6 tracks at the same time.. but if you want the sends to work you'd have to do them track by track.. No biggie, just might take a little longer, glad my suggestion helpd, cheers!

Yeah definitely does thanks mate...It's a bit of a hard Live set to prepare as I want to keep 2 tracks free that have a rack of all the Instruments I'm playing live, So where on the recording I'd have a Piano line, I want to play those parts actually live...Also I'm seperating the Drums and basses so that If I use a real Drummer or bassist I can just mute the parts a 'Real' bass player would play or a Real drummer would play... But then at the same time Keep bass lines and percusive stuff either of them were they playing, wouldn't play if that makes sense??? Same with the vocals, I'm not mixing down the Lead Vocal cos I wanna do that live, but I do want to keep the BV's...Its quite a nightmare to plan, but think once I've found the best method could be awesome and quite diverse to suit the occasion and line up on stage.... in case anyone has any suggestions!?

Same sort of deal goin over here.. I write the music with drum samples, and loops and stuff.. but then when I get together with my drummer I have MIDI clips that don't have Kicks and Snares, but I keep some of the hi-hats, cymbals, percussion stuff in there.. and then if it's a audio loop I just have an EQ with a low-cut and i think maybe a little cut on the mids and hi's so you still get the integrity of the loop but it's not all jumbled when he starts adding a beat to it..

As for bass, in my situation I'd just mute track 6 where my basslines are, and then when theres certain basslines I'd want to play thru I'd raise the volume, not that hard but it could get a little fishy if the bass player doesn't know what is happening..

Interesting - I've come across something that didn't seem completely explained in the video, should be a better way to do this...Once you take all your 16 bar Phrases into the Session View, I thought you could just set the loop button on all the clips so when you launch a 'Scene' the clips on that scene would loop indefinitely until the next was pressed>??

However, it seems all chopping the sections up has done is make each loop start at that specific point in the track AND unless you assign follow actions to launch the next scene, each scene left alone would just play out to track the end....

Hope you're still with me at this point...

In order for each clip in a scene to loop continuously it seems you have to FIRST consolidate (cmd+ J) each clip in the arrangement view and the only way being is to do this in by Highlighting each section in colums, Otherwise you end up gluing all the chopped sections back together again...

Once you've consolidated each Column (or what will later be 'each Scene' then drag back to arrange view - Now you can let each loop cycle over and over and can then Either Assign Follow actions anyway, Or have a foot pedal or something to launch Scene by Scene as you go....It does seem more complicated than it should but once done should work brilliantly,,, But is there an easier way....???

Are you sure the "Loop" button is highlighted for these clips??

yeah It was but it loops the ENTIRE Clip, in other words the LOOP brace is around the entire stretch of Audio, but the Start and End Locators cover the section that was Cut in the arrange view...Basically unless you Consolidate each section of each clip in the arrange page, you're basically duplicting all the clips, and by cutting the parts in arrange and tracsporting to session view, you have all identical clips with different start and end point in them...

SO they have the right loop brace but the start is all the way at the beginning and the stop is all the way the end? I think i'm gettin you..

Yeah pretty much, but they have the right Start and stop point but the Loop brace covers the whole audio clip outside the section you want to loop..
