Movie Scoring in 8 is a nightmare - keeps crashing

Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing issues with trying to score music and working with video in Live 8.
I get a crash every 10 minutes it seems. I literally have to save after every single piece of anything is recorded.
Could this be Live 8? Don't remember having so many issues in 7 (or even 6). Does anyone think the symptoms are simply Live 8's instability overall?
Thanks.

Just using quicktime and .mov
Seems to crash when I look through the browser...when I save....if I open up a plug in while the movie is playing...if I move the movie around the timeline...etc.
I'm losing it. Tried to run in Live 7 to see if there was a difference, but my authorizations were used up.
I will report back after going through the same scenarios with 7 once support gets back to me.

have you tried working with lower res version of your .mov
also check your video card settings if you have access to them and go for max accleration.
also might try collect all and save. close and re-open project.

its most likely that L8 is the cause.. if you own Logic and need to use live you might try to use Live as rewire slave.. at least up to version 8.09 this worked good from 8,1 live seems to have earned the ability to crash logic :-/

No problems with video here. been using .movs and .mp4s.
what's your setup? and what version of 8 are you using?
Could it possibly be any 3rd party plugins that you're using in the project?
Apart from scoring to movie in Live, I'm also using Live to fire video clips at gigs, so far, it's been super stable.
using a Macbook (unibody)2ghz, 2gigs ram, Live 8.1, NI AK1 soundcard, Launchpad, Nocturn and Padkontrol.

I have had issues with mov files crashing in Ableton Live 7 as well. I haven't tried in Live 8 yet. In Live 7, it seemed to be an Ableton vs Quicktime version issue. The newest versions of Quicktime crashed and so I reinstalled an older version of Quicktime (7.3) and it worked well.

I work with videos too all the time and the biggest factors that have caused Live 8 to crash were Kontakt and running out of memory. Kontakt has now become MUUUCH better after I switched on the "Kontakt Memory Server", it really doesn't crash that much any more.
I never noticed that the video would've caused crashing itself, it was always the lack of memory because of a big set.

Thanks for all the responses.
I have a unibody Macbook Pro 2.4 ghx with 4gb or RAM running on 10.5.8
The main plugin I am using for everything is Kontakt 4.0.5 and I only ever run one instance at a time and immediately render that to another audio track.
Seems like the biggest issues revolve around how Live interacts with files from the browser (i.e. pulling in different mov scenes or searching through Kontakt 3rd party software libraries) and Kontakt (even though I make sure not to run huge multis or anything crazy)
I have Logic 8, but am still not comfortable or nearly as fast as I am with Live. But if the constant crashing continues I may have to learn

just happened to stumble upon this thread and wanted to say:
yes. all the fucking time.
doesn't matter what resolution it's at, nor what codec etc (using qt anyways).
had 5 crashes with that today and i've only been doing audio for this 15 second snippet for the last 2 hours.
right now it crashed while dragging the movie file to an empty set (that is, the default set) in the arrangement. bam, crash.
just managed to somehow finish the audio editing and wanted to do some tweaking. no dice.
also my audio interface goes up the roof when working with video in live, ie: shittons of buffer overruns (which seems to happen randomly anyways after some hours of work), to complete refusal of playing stuff at all. a quick reboot of the audio interface solves it. you could say that it's my interface, but this ONLY happens with live.
nowhere else. fancy that.

I've had similar problems. Was just very recently finishing up a short-film score in Live and yes, with the video (quicktime file) in there, I was experiencing a lot more crashes than usual, mostly during Saving and opening / closing the session.

agreed. saving is one of the times it happens most for me. like....you try to save to actually help remedy all of the crashes and it causes most of the crashes.
THis was an older thread and I have since upgraded to a new 27in iMac and using Kontakt 5 more now and have seen less crashes than before. So it could be a power issue. Either way, if they are going to offer the video function, I would love to see some more efoort thrown its way. Seems a bit like it was thrown in and forgotten about.

yeah, i agree. especially considering how fast it is to do sound design with live. with *proper* video support it would be awesome.

Same here, not a single problem.

windows 7 64 professional, 4gb of ram, intel i5 dualcore at 2.53ghz.
no thirdparty plugins, no nothing except live and my sound card.
can't really be my graphics card either since it's a freaking ati 5650 HD card with 1gb of videomemoery and i highly doubt that you would need that just to play back a small little messy preview window.
oh, and also, did i mention that this problem is only with live?
yeah. blame my computer why don't you. :p
