Delete a midi note?

Is this possible via midi, I already tried sending a note value with velocity 0, this just results in no output. I'd like to send a value that could erase/delete a midi note already in the clip, via midi.

I think you will either have to sacrifice a velocity value - like 001 for example - or use a CC number to do it.

If I send a note value and a velocity of 1 that results in a new note with a velocity of 1. I'd like to delete an existing note by sending that same note value and some value to delete/remove. Maybe this is not possible with midi?

Here is an example of what I'd like to achieve. You have a midi clip looping, you play some C3 notes into it, still looping. Now you hold down some sort of shift button and the note C3, as this is held the C3 in the clip is removed/deleted when the playhead passing over it. In theory this works if you send it a velocity of 1 when the shift is held down but velocity 1 will still output a C3 note softly.

Unfortunately the only function with regards to selecting notes in the clip class seems to be "select_all_notes".
So I don't see a way to accomplish this, at least not from mind.
Yeah, I'm trying to do this with midi only because its real time, while the playhead is moving. I think those functions for clip editing are more suited for when a clip is not playing, no? I'm hoping maybe duration set to 0?

I am very interested in this as well. Coming from MPCs I always liked this feature of the MPC of erasing notes in realtime, like playing negative space. I don't know anything about M4L but the closest I've gotten is:
--in Live you route notes from one MIDI track to another MIDI track, recording on the destination track. put a scale plugin acting as a filter on the first track, the scale plugin having no notes pass through when on, the scale plugin turned on off by the press of a pad or butt0n cc on a controller. with first track playing and second recording, press the cc pad to erase notes, and those notes will be absent on the second (they will not be recorded). there is a way to do it on a per pad basis ie pad c3 only deletes c3, d3 only deltes d3 etc, this would be done with a rack of scale plugins., but explanation is beyond my ability at the moment.
I know this is not an answer to your question but hopefully is useful in some way. I will be getting m4L soon and will start looking into it.
I look forward to hearing about anyone's progress on this-- I think it would be a powerful tool if implemented in a more elegant way than I have described above.

(caveat: I haven't tried this!)
Would holding down a button sending velocity 0 overwrite whatever is going on "underneath"?

Unfortunately, sending a note with a 0 velocity value will not replace an existing note. This was the first thing I tried and also thought this must be possible, makes sense, but no such luck!!

Yeah, this idea originated from my old Alesis SR16 drum machine. After you created a pattern you could simply hold down the delete button and one of the drum pads as the pattern was looping the sound on that pad would be deleted as it was passed over.

bah, I'm sorry about that. Well, that's what happens when ya brainstorm, I guess.

just adding my bump so I get a reply email if you sort it!
I like the idea of being able to have a sort of step sequencer where I use my MIDI controller to control the actual notes in a MIDI clip - not real keen on the current step sequencer, or at least couldn't see how to MIDI map and use it like that, but I also have a drum machine that works like that, so that would suit me too.

the mpc style note delete would be a dream in live... unfortunately my max knowledge is only at the beginning so I guess I can't help much apart from wishing good luck.
best regards

there's a max4Live lesson that shows how to delete midi notes. I forget which it is, maybe the first one, I'll be home later to find out.

If all you want to do is not have a MIDI note sound, why don't you build a MIDI effect that sits downstream from your sequencer, looks for a list of input MIDI note numbers, and then routes *everything* that doesn't match activity related to the MIDI note downstream (i.e. it simply grabs anything related to middle C and passes everything else)? I expect that the midiselect object would pretty much do all that right out of the help file....

As I said I'm a beginner in max msp and still try to get the basics. But I see a problem in your suggestion.
How does the patch 'decide' if the midi-in note is a delete command trigged via midi-controller or a 'playback ' note from the midi clip self?
edit: just had an idea, but I don't have the overview of max to know if it's possible.
- to delete a note you have to press a modifier key(for example A1) and the key (for example C3; D3; E3) you want to delete.
- if you press the modifier key, you note is send on another midi channel so you patch knows if it's a delete note, a played note or a playback note from your clip.
I guess you have to make two max midi devices, the first one set the midi channel, the second one acts as a 'filter'.
->[ DEVICE set channel| press A1 then all played notes are on midi channel is 2] -> [ DEVICE filter| if midi channel is 2, move the note down aka delete it]
*played note = played via keyboard * playback note = note from the midi clip
ps: I have the feeling that there is a better way to do it.
