What else you got?

I've beemn through the kitchen and filled shit up with rattly shit and nicked stuff from the kids instrument box...what else you guys using for them live rolling percussion pizzaz?

Sounds like this can be a lot fun.
Do you just use a mic to record?

i like hitting random things with sticks and mallets,
or breaking wood, anything outside really.
though the bane of field recs seems to be distant traffic noise

Yep, just use a mic in t'studio but i do have a lil zoom H2 for field recordings...but like infinitizer says...traffic....and wind. the two no-nos of field recordings.

I used a kids tambourine and a yoghurt drink pot filled with lentils as a shaker....pretty cool. but I want some more shizz around the studio to rattle and shake.

I like the idea of hitting stuff with mallets and sticks though....might have to try some of that...

i am not very creative in that respect, guess i love my custom made wood djembe with real skin to much.

The garage can be a good place to create some interesting metallic sounds. Sandpaper can be used to make a good shaker/cabasa sound. Round metal bowls with a little bit of water create some interesting sounds when agitated and struck with something metal. I have collected lots of shakers, tamborines, hand drums, etc. that are great for livening up sequences.

Ah yes, waterbowls and the like. I am on that tonight!

My sister goes to this cool toy store where they have all these handmade toys. She gave me a couple of African musical toys. My favorite has a wooden stick handle with a tiny drum head on top (stretched animal hide) and 2 pieces of leather string with little wood chunks attached (same as the handle). You rotate the stick/handle by rubbing your hands together and it sounds sort of like a tabla. It's hard to get precise rhythms but when you do it rules, and when you don't it's all this cool glitchy polyrhythm. Probably going to record it and edit the results, maybe add a bit of reverb/chorus/delay effects also. My niece is only 2 so she hasn't noticed it's missing
