So I took a stab at some "bootleg" sound design -vid inside!

Well, I should say sound "redesign", as opposed to "design".

I got tired of waiting for these "student filmmakers" to send me their stuff, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. I took one of my favorite childhood flicks, and redesigned one of the most memorable, most sound intensive scenes.

In this case, I took the original TRON, and redid the sound for a short segment of the light cycle scene.

I uploaded it to vimeo and Youtube. Not sure how long it'll be up, since I'm almost sure I'll be hit with some sort of copyright infringement thing, but here are the links:

Did it all in live. All effects are native. The only third party thing i used was Zebra 2 for some of the sound layers.

I apologize for the crappy video quality. Exported directly from Live and it was a not-so-great quality source vid in the first place.

Hahaha, very nice! Lots of fun to see that scene with new audio!

It did sound quite dry to me though...no reverb, not much sense of being in a space, although that may very well be the idea since it's "inside a computer", and if I remember correctly the original scene was the same way. Nice work! I might have to try something like this....a fun project!

Funny you should mention it. I thought about the space thing for a while, and then indeed decided to go with the anechoic, computer-esque vibe. It does give it a very dry, gritty vibe, which I think will be hit/miss for some.

In a way I didn't want to go too far from the retro grittiness of the original. Didn't want to take it into TRON: Legacy territory. So I aimed for something in-between. TRON 1.5 or something like that.

Anyways, that was my rationale last night. Today I started seeing and hearing some faults, including the space thing you mentioned. Typical part of the learning process I guess. Sounds good the first time, then every single time after that, you keep finding little things you dislike about it, until you end up just hating the whole thing.

Anyways thanks again for the input! Exactly the type of feedback I need.

The dryness might work a little better if there were some very quiet ambient sound in the background to fill in the space slightly. I like the dryness but the silence in between is what gets me. Not really bad though.

I like this idea a lot. I suggested to a film composer friend that he re-score a favorite movie to use as demo material and practice....same sort of idea. Man I could think of all kinds of movies to do this with!

Very cool project.....seems like a great sound design exercise!

It was actually getting to me too. Went back and added some very very quiet BG ambience and also gave it just a tad bit of reverb.

I'm re-uploading to VIMEO. I love that you can replace the file instead of having to create a new one... as opposed to youtube

Oh, that is so sweet! I liked the new version better - it made it sound more... I don't know if "natural" is the proper word,
considering it's inside a computer programme, but it really gave it that "extra bit".

Great work, mate, and a nice reminder that you can do soooo much in terms of sound design in Live - you just need to be in
the proper state of mind, I guess.
