Problem with launching clips with MPD 32 pads

Hi guys, just got myself an Akai MPD 32. Managed to set it up so that the faders, buttons, and knobs are all midi mapped - and they all correspond to parameters really well.
However, when I assign the Akai MPD 32 pads to audio or midi clips and launch them, it lags and I get CPU overload and ableton freezes for a couple of seconds. This happens if I map the pads to anything.
In my Midi/Sync Preferences, I've put all track buttons 'on' and all remote buttons 'on' (leaving Sync off). But I've played around with these settings and it doesn't seem to make any difference.
I've also set the MPD 32's midi clock to external.
A final point is that my Key/MIDI in Indicator and Key/MIDI out Indicator are constantly flashing.
The confusing part is that I've got great responsiveness with the faders, buttons and knobs - and it's only the pads I've got this problem with.
