Trying to build up a home studio with the family

My father's been wanting a home studio for a while now, and we're finally getting to it.
we want to record live (all musicians playing at once) so we are looking to get some speakers, a mixer, and possibly some studio monitors for close editing.
the most that concerns us are the PA speakers. I'm pretty inexperienced with audio, and whenever i look at PA speakers i just hear high treble LOUD noise for out door use.
do i have a bad vision of PA speakers?

what are the benifits of studio monitors and PA speakers?
which ones should i be looking to buy?
also, what about mixers? i use live, and i was thinking getting a mixer compatible with live would be quite cool, but on the other hand i do have an MPD24 that could control anything i really want to in live.
over all i'm still starting out with this proccess and help would be greatly appreciated.
