Blog as a main website... Good or bad?

I just got myself a tumblr blog for my music stuff... Does that seem like a good venue to promote as a main website? Its nice and clean and I cant think of anything to not use it as a main site. Seems more personal anyway.

What are your thoughts?

I think blogs as a main website work fine. They can be as static or as interactive as you like. I've actually chosen wordpress for my site. Still working out a few bugs, but it definitely makes things more flexible and managable than a traditional html site.

Also, I had a listen to your release on soundcloud. Good stuff!

I'd just make sure you keep it to music related stuff. I like knowing some personal stuff about the artists I like, but not when they start going into "every passing thought I have is gold" mode. There's plenty of outlets for that type of activity, like this forum, so don't clutter up your music blog with personal bullshit.

Also don't do that on twitter if you're going to use that as a serious promotion tool, or at least wait until you're famous enough to the point that the masses might find what you had for breakfast interesting. I stopped following several artists and their music becuase I don't care what the weather is like where they live or that they want to issue a "good morning" every damn day.

In summary: artists should have some mystery about that.

+1 for a Wordpress blog as music site. Once you wrap your head around it, they're really easy to update. You can keep up with all of the latest web 2.0 trends really easily with plug-ins. That sounds kind of weird, but it's great to add all of the latest high tech crap to your page with minimal effort.

I agree with BM about over posting, and retaining some mystery. But on the same foot, you don't want your blog to be completely inactive.

With certain Wordpress themes you can set it up so the home page is a static page, and the blog can be a tab. This may or may not be the best way to go. It depends if you want the blog posts to be the main thing, or if you want the blog posts to be like periodic updates, and have static pages for the tunes and bio and such.

Also, buy a domain and get web hosting and use wordpress.org instead of wordpress.com. And do all the crap that Rave does, and one up him by having a current looking home page too.

i don't think having a blog as a main site is too bad considering that many of the folks on beatport have just a myspace page. but as was mentioned, if that's your official artist page then keep to business-related material only.

I have a myspace but honestly its just too clunky in this day and age. Ill have it updated when I have some money to hire a web designer.

Had a glance at it (feeling adventurous, what can I say):

Change out the profile picture to something that is either you posing behind your equipment taking the music seriously while twisting a knob, or to an original piece of art...album cover maybe.

Also, don't post pics of dead crowds, and don't call them dead crowds. Instead, post players for all of your live sets, and thank everyone who showed up to every one of your sets, even if you know it's bullshit.

Other than that, wordpress is good - you may want to consider a regular domain name (just a straight-up .com) for yourself, and then have it redirect to your wordpress blog, for the sake of appearances.
