Return Channel Latency

I know this has been asked before but I haven't seen any solutions to it (I think).
I'm running a VST synth to a return which has Filter Delay on it. The delay coming out of the return track has latency so the actual delays don't pair up correctly. I can use the Track Delay option to move the return track up a bit but I can't get it to sound perfectly clean. I'm afraid all of my returns might have this problem but on the others I have reverb setup so it's less noticeable.
Am I doing something wrong?
Also, when I do any automation on the master channel, let's say turn on a filter, it comes in early. Delay on the return, early on the master... I'm stumped.
I noticed when I turn delay compensation OFF, the timing on the master channel goes away (but all my other tracks fall off timing, obviously).
