IN Brisbane Australia the talk among the grey people is about dealing with the few convict offspring neanderthal fookwits who get into fights at pubs, by napalming all licensed venues... in a manner of speaking....

It looks like soon in Brisbane they will cut back licensing hours moving the already draconian 3am lockout to 2 am and making it so that you can't enter a club after 2 am - meaning if there are 2 artists you want to see in 2 different venues on the one night, you basically can't. There is a lot of talk about the major impact this is going to have on the local music industry and touring artists, but the policy makers are made up of, and only seem to serve the over 55's, so there is little hope of that swaying them.

It's a ridiculous approach, but it's looking like it's going to happen.

The politicians keep referring to Los Angeles as the example where this type of thing was introduced and apparently worked - is there anyone here in LA who can chime in on this? Did it work? has it ruined the music scene? is it the end of the world? do I need to move?

That's why here in LA, artist have move to these festivals and parties they throw in the middle of the desert where they could play 'til the sun rises. I hate rattlesnakes.

I came from a small town in Yorkshire where chucking out time was 11:30 p.m. Mon-Thu and 2.30 a.m. Fri-Sat.

Although my mate and I frequented a pub that did lock ins on a Tuesday night, we'd usually win the quiz night that occurred that night, which was usually 8 beer vouchers top prize, so Wednesday mornings at work were usually puketastic affairs !

O Happy Days.

When I moved to London and some clubs on a weekend don't even open until 1 a.m. and run through to 8 a.m. was a real eye opener. Pity I was a broke student who could never afford to go down the West End to partake in this fun....

I guess just to clarify... Brisbane is the 3rd biggest city in Oz with a population of about 2 million. It really has started to look like a world city, and now they are taking it back 20 years.

what time can the shows start?

The solution: Leave the fucking house earlier. The sun went down a long ass time ago (at least in the states).

Are you talking about the time that the building has to be empty or the time they stop serving alcohol because in my mind they are one in the same. When they're done serving alocohol I'm done hanging out.

LA has one of the most vibrant music scenes in the world, and thats despite the shitty 2am last call. So does san fransisco

thanks.... it's good to hear it hasn't been affected....

I live close to SF and have been to most of the big cities in the states and almost all of them have always had a 2 AM cut off on alcohol, generally last call at 1:30 AM, but some stay open a little past 2. So I've always found it kind of funny when people think it's going to be the end of the universe when their area starts following the same laws. And of course there's still always underground parties that don't follow the letter of the law on a lot of levels.

One of the more interesting and fun places in SF is the End Up. They stop serving alcohol at 2 but stay open until 5 or 6 in the morning. Then they close for 1 hour to clean up a bit, reopen at 6 or 7 and start serving alcohol again that minute. It feels kind of weird and like you're doing something wrong or loser at first but at the same time cool because you're hanging around a bunch of other people doing the same...and of course a DJ packing the floor with the tunes.
