I hope some one else is havin this problem coz its a bit weird

The current set i am workin on at the moment will be 95 to 100 % cpu using when it is STOPPED.. but when i manage to press play.. (once it completes the instuctions) it drops to about 40 to 35 percent... this is really weird ... all the plugs i have plus reason have been going fine and the usage has been the right way round untill just the other night .. i was going at it for quite a bit then i pressed stop and all the pads on my microkontrolstarted flashin and everything froze..!!!!!!

I have seen this on my setup also. You MUST email Ableton direct with this problem. CPU usage and metering is a joke in 4.x and they should be told.

denormalized floats?

PC or Mac? Also, are you using third-party plugins? This sounds like the classic "denormalized floats" problem, where doing calculations on very very small numbers takes much longer than usual. A plugin could be generating these numbers when there's no input data, but when you start playback the problem would go away as "real" audio data starts flowing. This problem can happen on the Mac but is much more common on the PC.
