Tip to Ableton regarding Macros

A lot of users wants more macros in racks. The problem is of course how will it fit with control surfaces and old macro assignments?
I just got an idea that can add macros, while keeping the 8 paradigm:
The 8 macros could have a new second mode: some sort of xy pads, and when switching to this mode, old macro assignments would stick to X or Y direction. Maybe even some sort of surround layout, with multiple directions.
