How important is support for 5.1 in a future version of ableton LIVE?

I really don't find surround support that important. I mean, Live is an app that's meant to appeal to the DJ and performing musician. If it were dubbed as a "studio" app, then I'd say go for it...
I'd rather see stuff like improved piano roll editing features, saveable MIDI mappings, delay compensation, DX effect (if not in real-time, at least as an operation to audio clips/files) support, etc.

what makes you think 5.1 is purely for a studio environment?
i think ableton LIVE is created for making music
irrespective of where u happen to be doing it
i'm doing a live gig next month with a quad PA.....
but thats cool

Cool! I didn't know the majority of venues had 5.1 setups these days...

I'm not sure that'd work very well in a clubbing enviroment, depends on how big the club is I suppose, but I'd imagine the sound would be pretty bad if yo uwere near the back, and the rear speakers were too loud...
I can't see how it'd work properly.
I think it'd be fairly low on my wish list.

5.1 may be fine, finer would be a free configurable surround setup.
I use live in theatre and need for moving sounds is quite high
more details please.....

"a free configurable surround setup"
i'm intrigued
its just i have experienced 6.1
& for me I can achieve the localisation on a horizonal plane
with quad + sub + centre (for onscreen sync bizo) ie 5.1
from there i'd next rather add a height speaker
my 6.1 would be 5.1 + 1 on z axis
theres quite a few pan pairs then......
but just because its called 5.1 doesnt mean u cant
put the speakers where u want them
out of interest....
how many are u using/wanting for yr theatre work?
how doi u amke it work currently
in the absence of a multichannel ableton LIVE...
more details

In general:
What exactly is surround? Can you really produce a virtual room with 5.1? Do you need wavefield synthesis to make it _really_ cool? How will you ever be able to easily control 3D-moves within a 2D-computer?
To be well grounded:
Just started to use Live here; normally we use Nuendo or Protools with Sigma to produce and THS to play the shows (fine german surround program and player, see details at
http://www.apbtools.com/ ) One time it was all my console that made the positioning, but that's quite a mess if you have a lot of moves
We have a fix constellation of front speakers, 3 surrounds + 3 rear speakers in the audience, splitted into pit and tear plus lsp in the ceiling plus sub front and sub rear. Sure u can somehow reduce yourself with 5.1, but _really_ nice effects are made with more output ways, sometimes including a complex console-setup. And we don't speak of effects starting on rear stage and wandering around in the audience, yet... Or sounds wandering around from ground to ceiling.
Well, in fact we are reduced to 24 outputs by interface, anyway, but being able to try out movements live in Live

during rehersals would make it so much easier - no changing the program, no pre-producing. One more means for creativity.

i think that a stable, milestone release is more important
you could use another prog to mix to surround.
and also, most clubs are not equipped with surround.
makes no sense in terms of audio delivery within a club environment
surround usefull?

I remember seeing the orb a few years ago and remember there being speakers all over the place... (many on the ceiling... big space in toronto)
I recall sounds flying around the room... in more dynamic ways than left to right....
Remember.... maybe you dont use it rignt now... But its nice to have to option for it... there's alot of people on this planet... lots of ideas...
If I found myself plugged into a 5.1 system... i think it would be cool to be able you use it ....
why not?

I saw Roger Waters (from Pink Floyd) at Glastonbury 2002, and he had a 5.1 setup. Man that was impressive! surround sound on the main stage at glastonbury! At one point he played the sound of helecopters landing, and everyone starts crouching down, and looking around cos they think that a shit load of helecopters are coming from behind them. That was class.
I do think that there are more important issues that need to be addressed in the next Live update, but this is definately on my wishlist for a future update. (Besides, Live 4 only came out a couple of months ago!!!)

hm
i may be wrong here, but couldnt one basically achieve surround
with an appropriate soundcard, mixer, and speaker setup...
then of course assigning the proper outs etc per track?
panning for an eargasm

Surround panning within Live would be a great feature. I think the point of Live is interactivity, and if there's an infrastructure for 5.1 ie. club is set up or you bring extra speakers, then this feature would be great for people who want to throw sounds around the room.
