FYI M-Audio Sub have a on-off Sub for the mix

Yes of course. Club sound systems DO have sub bass and you just can't know what the sound will be like without a sub (assuming that you produce club music and your speakers don't reach down there already).

Besides that it totally makes sense to check your mix on smaller speakers, car hifi etc. But just because some listeners don't have a proper sound system doesn't mean you shouldn't mix on one.

If you have the money as well as a properly acoustically treated room, then sure - get it! Otherwise, treating your room to perfection will probably get you a million times better mixes than any sub can give you in a crappy environment.

True and good general point, but doing a mix in a perfectly treated room on laptop speakers will also not get you anywhere. You can always find extreme examples, how does that help on the topic of mixing with a sub or not?

I heard from my local Adam dealer that nearfield monitors do not require room treatment. What do you think?

acoustics based on physics. you cant ignore the space. try to arrange your studio place and listen to the result. no need pricey stuff if you can find a decent arrangement. near field means you are relatively close to the speakers for optimum audio but the reflections from walls, objects and the materials always matter. i have a pair of alesis mk2 passive which is far from a good studio equip but it has a good sub range and no need subbass. the room arrangement is not great either and therefore i couldnt get more "accurate" bass if i buy some sub

I would keep away from a sub to mix with as it introduces another variable
