FREEZE - would be good if this saved RAM as well as CPU....

I'm not a regular follower of this forum, so excuse me if I bring up something that's been discussed to death...
I have an issue with freezing in Live, and that is that it doesn't unload the VSTi or effect from RAM. So although you can work around CPU limits with freeze, you're still limited by the amount of RAM in your machine.
This seems dumb. Other hosts sensibly unload from RAM in freeze operations. Is there any prospect of having this option in Live?

freeze then flatten
that unloads the vst's
can't unflatten it like freeze
but if you save a previous version of the track you can always drag the vst channel back into your track to make some alterations if you need to

yeah i have done that - fair enough i guess - i just think it would be more efficient to unload them from ram in the first place. if it's a big complex project i end up having to manage a lot of these saved channels in the browser. Not that bad I suppose, but I do find it a bit of a workflow disruption.
But you're right - it does solve the problem!

I definitely wish it unloaded ram as well. Not only that, but I wish you could chose to freeze with or without the effects when using a plug-in instrument. Currently I'll sometimes freeze a channel, group it by itself and then put the fx on the group, but then you can't group that again.

Yes, I wish Freeze would take in the send fx, cos the I have frozen loads of stuff only to find out its the reverb sends that are causing the overloads. Dont see why it can't be done, considering other DAWs can do it.

it's not great, I have raised this before.
I hope they sort this out for live 9. . .
Also, the freeze function is bloody slow, I have an 8 core machine, why can't it use all the cores, one for each effect in the chain perhaps - it's not real time so less latency issues than tracks and sends etc when running stuff live.
I use freeze so much because or Ram issues and the fact that live runs so much slower (please give us a turn off live mode that is more processor efficient please abes!) than other applications. it's horrendously slow. i spend so much of the time waiting for the processes to complete.
I know live is a 'live' application. but loads of people use it as a studio tool - make it more efficient pls!

Freeze and flatten is one of the most awesome things in Live!!
Yeah, I've done a pad part and I want to chop up bits of it. Freeze and flatten, there you go, do what you like with it.
Save a few versions of each track as a workround. Save one before a flatten. Flatten then save to a different file.
I agree that maybe in a perfect world you wouldn't use workrounds but sod it eh? If you do, you do!

yeah brilliant,
I think you'd be slightly less enthusiastic if you are working on a massive project that most of the tracks have to be frozen due to ram usage / cup overload.
It is excellent, but try freezing a track that's got an Au, amplitube, a chain of soundtoys fx, a rack with a reverb and a bit more distortion after the reverb etc. it's sloooow. 10 minute waits for the freeze function and the fact it doesn't release ram is a real pain when your project gets full and you are hunting down what's open and using all that ram - esp if you are using racks and have altiverbs hidden away in them . .
Anyway it's cool, I love ableton, it's just that it could be a lot, lot better. they went through this period of really listening to their user base but these days that seems like a long time ago.
there are so many functions that we have been asking for for several iterations that haven't made it yet. I wont list them but certainly numerical parameter entry for automation break points, snap to grid for break points, bezier curves, faster freeze oh and a whole host of other stuff.
Anyway it's a cool as f*ck program, I love it and recommend it to ppl, I just wish they would add some more functionality.

agreed - for me it's one of the the things that stop Live from being a real standalone DAW.
It's fantastic as an idea generator/loop playground, and a good place to get a new track started - but if it's a project of any kind of complexity, I'll end up moving stuff over to Reaper for development and mixing.

10 years later and I haven't found a real fix to this issue. It has crippled my workflow as my professional career evolves around Ableton Live. I've been forced to use Studio One, Logic X, or Cubase for big projects that utilize multitudes of robust kontakt libraries using upwards of 60+gb of RAM. This has resulted in a mess, where all of my projects are scattered across different DAWs, and all my big Live projects are fragmented into layers of flatten and non-flattened versions. Really sucks.
