I know I'm not the only one that does this

I wonder how much time I've wasted over the years on imaginary gain structure

Not as much time as i've wasted on imaginary talent

Ha ha ha... yes, compressors in particular are "time machines". i.e. Just started turning the knobs and ... woah ... you're in the future. End results are typically imperceptibly different, almost never objectively "better".

And I used to think that it was my equipment that needed upgrading. No you are not alone. However, I used to kill my tunes to death with tweaking. Then, after a while I found out that a good draw of weed was the best remedy when tweaking.

Had a funny moment recently where I added Ozone to a mix and GUI popped up. The person in the room immediately commented that it sounded so much better now! All FX were turned off....

^^ Yeah, no shit. This is why I love Live's design. All the devices look more or less the same, so there's no danger of having
the sound "coloured" (literally) by lots of fancy colours and bells and whistles.

Back when I was a rocker the lead guitarist of the band I was in would always say my guitar was out of tune compared to his. So we'd do that guitarist thing of facing each other while fumbling with the tuning pegs until we were in tune with each other. What he didn't realize is at some point I stopped turning my peg and just had my hand up there looking like I was doing something and after about 10 seconds of me doing absolutely nothing he'd say that my guitar was finally in tune.

The bass player that works with us on some of our tracks will hear changes that I haven't made or the exact opposite of what he just said.

him "oh I like way 2"

me "so you like it this way?" playing way 1

him "yep"

me "this way it is then" playing way 3 (first time ever)

him "yeah thats the best"

lol. Could be worse - I used to be in a band where the bassist refused to tune. He literally did not understand the value of it, and thought that as long as each string is roughly in tune with the other on each individual guitar then it didn't matter if you were out of tune with eachother.

I know exactly what you mean about tuning guitars, some people are sure that they can tune by ear but just fail at it. For those moments there's nothing better than this....

actually yeah that reminds me of years ago when I was in the bio box with the sound engineer for this young band and they asked for a little more treble in the monitors. There was no direct line of sight and the engineer just stood there with his arms crossed and said "how's this?"
the guy said "a little more"
he still stood there arms crossed and said "what about now?"
"little more"
"how about now?"
and he said "yeah that's perfect"
