Large Volume spikes when dropping audio files into track

This has been happening more frequently lately that i am getting some weird spikes randomly when dropping audio files. been using 8.1 for awhile with no issues and this has just been happening more recently
sometimes i dont have a limiter on my master and it registers +26 db. Is this messing up my D/A convertor??
