significant latency after CPU spike or audio "hiccup"

Hi everybody -
I've done several searches on this, but I have yet to find a discussion that deals with the problem I'm having.
I'm using Live 8.1.3 with an Edirol FA-101 connected via firewire. The problem I am having is that, frequently, something happens in Live (usually a random CPU spike) which throws the session out of whack and causes a significant delay in both audio and MIDI input. I'm guessing this is an issue with my laptop and not the Edirol because even MIDI devices that are not at all connected to the Edirol also cause a delay (we're talking at least half a second - not good when you're trying to play and sing along).
The only way I can remedy the problem is to restart Live. That's really not a big deal, because I can always just insert banter between tracks while it reloads. However, it has started doing it more frequently within a set (i.e. I'll be halfway through a song, suddenly there's a glitch, and then this dreaded delay kicks in - summarily killing the performance).
How can I avoid this? It seems the problem is much more frequent in Snow Leopard, so perhaps it's just a bug that is still being worked out. Currently, I'm using a sample rate of 48000, and my buffer size is set all the way up to 650 samples - but still, it happens frequently! On some tracks, my CPU meter gets up to around 60% - but just a few months ago this rarely ever happened, even with a CPU meter reading of 75%. Now, it happens practically every other set.
Any ideas? Anybody having similar issues? Thanks in advance!
Drew
