You can't beat the sonalksis comp, it really is a madphat compressor.

Re: Live's comp 'gentle squeeze' is one awesome preset for guitar and vox, really smooths things out. I use it quite a bit for that.I think it's underrated for some things.

I feel sorry for it.

I use the Compressor in Live for 99% of my mixes. I just tried Cytomic - The Glue last week and I absolutely love it for colouring, and it definitely can "glue" your mix together, as the name suggests.

Obviously it's a matter of taste, so I'd suggest demo a few compressors before buying. I also hear good stories about the Pro-C by Fabfilter!

For "warmth" you could also try pressing the FB button on the Compressor in Live, but then you loose the Sidechain option, which from what I read, you'd like to use it for.
