There WAS a reason. They've moved on. It's a paradigm I hope others follow.
It doesn't have to be confusing; there's still versioning, just not in the name.
If the biggest issue is someone asking you which version you have, there should be enough intelligence to come up with some kind of answer specific to that version ie, "the one with spline automation" or "the best one".

2 is specifically significant, it becomes less so after that.
