I just took delivery of my new external harddrive and Zonet cardbus firewire adapter but the adapter causes my computer to freeze when it detects the new hardware.

"found new hardware Via OHCI compliant IEEE 1394 host controller" = frozen XP.

Anyone dealt with this before??

I had all sorts of problems getting a Firewire adapter that worked with my sound interface (M-Audio Audiophile). Maybe the VIA chipset isn't compatible with your PC. Texas Instruments, Lucent and a couple of others make chips for the IEEE 1394 standard.

Also there are three different types of Firewire standards. The original 1995 standard, IEEE 1944a and IEEE 1394b. In the end I just tried 4 different adapters until I found one that worked.

Yeah, copy that. I tried three different cardbus adapters to give myself more USB2.0 and firewire ports, to attach my audiophile and lacie d2 drive to. it was no end of trouble. ended up sacking the lot and getting el cheapo unpowered USB 2.0 hub that just plugs into the existing usb port and gived me enough with the 1 on board firewire port.

i was all over dell and the cardbus suppliers for help but they just shrugged. spent weeks trawling the net looking for fixes, but there are none.

it's a pain the the ass.

I only have USB 1.1 ....any suggestions?

The Via CardBus chipset sucks... sorry to let you know after the fact but most audio interface manufacturers recommend the TI or Lucent chipsets for there cardbus and firewire interfaces.

True. The crazy thing was that the first cardbus I tried was the Via chipset. Didn't work so phoned up M-Audio who said "yeah Via's crap, we always recommend TI" Got a TI cardbus, didn't work. Then got a Lucent one, which didn't work either. Fourth one was a Via again and of course this one works fine. So fuck knows, it's totally random from what I can see.

After doing loads of digging around it basically seems that the only ones that ever work are the decent brand names like Startech, Belkin, Ratoc etc.

any idea?

can you just use USB 2 instead? whats your setup details? I'll give you some tips, believe me I have walked the road...
