How to for a Dummy!

Hi,
So I've recorded one track and have something that I want to work with and add to it.
What I have in mind is this ... playing along with it and recording that second track. This means I have to hear what is recorded so I can play along with it -- to rehearse it first, and then to record it.
Having a hard time figuring out things here. I'm not just adding some weird this and that off the screens for some effects. I'm adding another track while playing along with what I already have.
Is there a simpleton video/lecture somewhere that doesn't take short cuts and allows one time to also get more familiar with the program? The majority of stuff out there is in too much of a hurry for an orgasm and is not satisfying at all with the whole process.
And thx a bunch. And I'm looking for someone in the PDX/Vancouver area that can help ... and no, dj's please take a hike. I'm into music and exploring what's inside, not just adding loops. Same thing in many ways, but not the same thing. Think of it as the old TEAC and you are adding something to track 4!
